I've had this book awhile, not realizing it was a narrative of the history of covered bridges, not just a picture book! So I learned some new things, some things I knew, having grown up in New England where there are lots of covered bridges in use. I was surprised when I realized that the author was not the photographer, and I wished that she had put the bridges next to the relevant narrative. That was one thing the author pointed out, that it is generally thought that New England has more covered bridges than anywhere, which it does not. My thinking is that the New England states are so small, it just seems like a lot. I love covered bridges and hope there are enough people who do, to keep maintaining the existing ones! They add character and romance to our countryside, not to mention being picturesque.
