There was a good selection of great commanders from history but most of them were the same ones in other such books. Alexander was there as well as Napoleon and Lee. And if it was written by a Brit you know Rommel was there. I was happy to see the likes of Genghis Khan and Yamashita mentioned. What would have been nice was to see some of the lesser known yet capable commanders such as the smarty-pants who beat the British at Cowpens. (Spoiler alert: It wasn't Mel Gibson!) I did appreciate the 'after the battle' reports, as well as the diagrams and drawings of the weapons and troops. The maps and paintings of the battlefields left a lot to be desired. Some showed detail while others were so vague that I just read the captions and gave up trying to study the maps or pictures. As a stand alone book it is pretty informative for most, and a good place to start if you are doing a report for school.

This was a good overview read but was not very in depth on any one commander.
