This provides a great introduction to role-playing games in general, and to D&D as a specific game! While it's the (now very) old rule-set, the introductory dungeon is straightforward and super easy to convert to other rule-sets (I'm running it as a 5e game). The included miniatures are good sculpts, well-detailed, and very evocative of the classic D&D classes. The included adventure starts characters as no-level / no-class "normal people", which is perfect for new players; the intro adventure is split into 4 sessions, each one introducing new information (and new rules) for each of the players. This is easily adaptable to the newer rules, and a really fun way to introduce new players to the various parts of the game. Because of the pacing of the introductory sessions, it is easy to allow the characters to explore and take chances, and lose characters; creating a "new character" for the intro sessions is as easy as rolling the stats and jumping back in, but not going through an intimidating complete character setup. There are tips on Dungeon Mastering the adventure & sessions, and almost all of them are timeless and usable for any edition of the game (or other RPGs that have a game master). It's written with the assumption that the DM hasn't played before, and would have been great for my first campaign as GM. It also includes a partially-created dungeon for DM to finish populating and the party to explore after the intro sessions, with the characters that survive the intro sessions. I would recommend this box set for anyone who has played a little bit of D&D but wants to try DMing, or an experienced player/DM that wants an easy-to-convert short set of adventures!
