This is one of two books about welcoming newcomers that I've read as part of my process to revamp our church's visitor system. After all of the articles, webinars, and advice that I've read or listened to, You Are a Miracle jumps out at me as a breath of fresh air. I recognize this as 100% my personal preference, but I really dislike the business/entrepreneurial/marketing language that is common in how-to ministry books. With Houts however, I found an author who gave me exactly what I was looking for, a spirit-filled methodology for reaching out to meet the needs of newcomers, not manipulate them into coming back and boosting numbers. His need and relationship centered picture of ministry speaks my own spiritual language, and reveals his passionate heart for loving others well. I would highly recommend this book for anyone looking at their welcome ministry, or just anyone who has a heart for hurting people. Houts offers an insightful and centering perspective that is hard to find anywhere else.

This is an excellent book for every Christian. If you already have a thriving church, you are starting a church, home fellowship or you simply care about people, this is a must-have book. This book tells you in practical terms how to make people feel loved and wanted. Forget about the usher tags and the door greeters. That is not what makes visitors feel welcome and want to come back. This is a book that will remind you of how it feels to come in to a church where you feel awkward and alone. It teaches you what to look for and how to respond to the stranger looking for people who will see them as people, not as pew fillers. This would be an excellent book to use for a class in Body building.
