Review # 1 was written on 2017-04-05 00:00:00 Maureen Steinhauer This is a coffee table book that I found on sale at a time when I was contemplating a move to North Carolina to escape New England winters. The book is a few years old, but something about the photographs seems older, very 1970s and 1980s. I like the organization of the book, slowly panning from west to east with photographs and trivia along the way (I did not know that roughly 1/3 of the U.S. population lives within a day's drive from.. I forget the ski resort, but it's in North Carolina). Most of the shots are nice but not terribly creative (although I love a shot of the.. Blue Ridge Parkway? It's framed to look like a curve of the road suspends itself way out over a beautiful set of mountains, surreal and intriguing), and most of the trivia is typical for what a tourist board would put in a brochure, but reading this book did feel like a quick taste of the variety that North Carolina has to offer, and it would make a thoughtful gift for anyone new to the state. |
Review # 2 was written on 2013-11-03 00:00:00 Douglas Shaw If you are interested in Mount LaConte, Smoky Mountain Hiking Trails (Non-AT) or the natural history of the area this is an excellent quick read. It uses the trail system at Mt LaConte to provide a nature tour, good botanical and geological overview. We are spending our vacation backpacking these trails in a few weeks and this has been an excellent primer. If interested, don't buy it, after August 7, 2009 I would be happy to share. |
