Seems like a condensed form of Shelby Foote's three volume Narrative. Written in 1992, it is very dated. Not much on politics. The Gettysburg Address, for example, gets only a couple of sentences. No discussion of events leading up to the war. Very critical of President Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S. Grant. Very favorable to the rebels.

For those with a deep interest in the US civil war there is a rich range of specific books or multi-volume histories. For those seeking an introduction, this book provides in a single volume an insight into the politics, the battles and the people involved in this conflict.
