This isn't a book that you would normally read. I mean... who in their right mind would read an entire game walkthrough as a normal "book", without even playing the game itself? So let me explain why I did so. This book covers the old Prince of Persia games, the first two games. I've played those games many times before, and recently I began to play them again; they have aged pretty well and are still fun to play. I stumbled upon this book and I was like "I should take a look at this, even though I'm pretty familiar with these games, there might be some tricks or secrets that have been slipped through my fingers." So I took a look at the book and it instantly hooked me. It is not written as a direct guide per se; like "go left, do this, do that...", instead, the whole text is narrated by the prince of Persia himself as he recalls his journey and a scribe named Hamza pens it (yeah, not exactly Persian... but the game takes place sometime after Islam so...). His narration gave me so much more insight into his character and his story. He starts his narration with events before the beginning of the first game and eventually is sent to the dungeons and the first game begins. Most of the trivial events of the game that players might not pay close attention to are described in a really interesting manner; his encounters with enemies (whom you just simply fight in the game) and traps are presented in much detail. The text on its own may seem confusing as an actual walkthrough; after all it's meant to be a guide for a video game not some fantasy novel, so each part is accompanied by screenshots of the actual game as visual cue. The actual writer of the book (Rusel DeMaria) refers to himself as a translator and the text is presented as a modern translation of some old manuscripts from centuries ago. There's even one page written in Farsi (which is the beginning of the story and is translated to English in the next page). What really got my interest is the fact wherever you can take several paths to complete a level, the writer (or the fictional translator) tells you that there are several manuscripts left and it has to be discovered which one is the original one and he proceeds by presenting all the versions one after another. If you've been a fan of the old Prince of Persia games and haven't already read this book, I highly recommend it. You're definitely going to enjoy it. If you haven't played the games, you should give them a try, but beware! Those games are really tough, so this book might come in handy.

I LOVED the original two Prince of Persia games that we had on our old Mac when I was younger. This book was so much fun - it's a strategy guide but written as though it's fiction rather than in a straight forward, "go here" sort of way.
