Review # 1 was written on 2011-01-08 00:00:00 Fabio Silva This book is about the economic and physical philosophy of scholars at the universities of Oxford and Paris in the thirteenth and fourteenth century. It tries to show that changes in physical thought, especially the idea that different intensities of a quality can be represented by lines of different lengths, became popular because of advances in understanding market economics. The author finds some provocative similarities, but I thought he was stretching them way too far in claiming a cause and effect relationship. But the book has a lot of information on late medieval thought, especially theories of just exchange and usury based on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, which is hard to find. |
