Historian David McCullough once said, “History is who we are and why we are the way we are.” Over the weekend I finished Bahamian Society After Emancipation by Bahamian Historian Gail Saunders. It’s a series of essays over various time periods or people groups in The Bahamas. Also, I adore Gail Saunders. Have you ever wondered why people acted or reacted the way they do? Why the government acts the way it does? Why society moves to the rhythm it does? Looking back at history might give one an answer or at least a clue. BSAE touches on - the role of women in Bahamian Society - Family Life - Emancipation and “Over-the-Hill” (The Over the Hill was one of the black communities in Nassau) - The Bahamas in American History (Revolutionary War, Prohibition etc) - The ‘coloured’ middle class - Life on the Outer Islands of The Bahamas - Aspects of African Bahamian Culture - The 1937 and 1942 riots - The 1958 General Strike - Race Relations and the Formation of National Identity I enjoyed learning more about these topics. Being ignorant of history, especially one’s own can have disastrous consequences. Those who scoff and scorn the subject of history do not realise how lively and thrilling it can be. History is much more than dates and names, it’s people’s lives and feelings played out for one to see.

This was exactly what I was looking for: an in-depth, highly detailed series of essays on life in the Bahamas during the 19th and 20th centuries. I'm writing an alt-history novel set in the Bahamas in 1908 and wanted to base it heavily in reality. This book had great information for me to use.
