The Middle East Economy by Charles Issawi is a series of essays that go by time period and region around the Middle East comparing and contrasting its economic development with various parts of the world from Europe in the early period to Japan and the former Yugoslav republics. The essays stay at a high level with just enough depth to keep the reader satisfied but if you are looking for a specific time period or an econometric analysis this book will fall short for those categories. Egypt is the main foci of the book but time is spent on Iraq, Iran and Turkey as well as the smaller states like Lebanon, Syria and Libya. The discussion focuses on the lack of development in the middle east via an analysis of artisan development, industrial development and agricultural output as well as factors like life expectancy and literacy. The recovery part is mostly covered in the 1970’s with OPEC and the price of oil. Overall if you are looking for a primer on Middle East Economics this is as an excellent choice with clear analysis and thoughtful topics without getting bogged down in equations and mathematical analysis.

Okay, I haven't read through the entire book. But this is one of the better textbooks on Quantum Theory I've encountered.
