This turns out to be a shrink-bashing story, not only because of the author's simplistic advice on self-care for women facing situations similar to her own -- written strictly for the lowest common denominator among her readership and ultimately kind of insulting to them -- but also because she published this long before she was really ready to come to grips with her own issues. Is this something a counselor ought to be writing about? Her unresolved exploration into an area she really ought not to be so naïve about, as a license professional in the field? Her self-pity? The enormous unaddressed questions in this story are most disturbing of all -- like the one about whether the cobbler's children are going barefoot here -- are her own kids safe from this man? What about his known victims? Her stated concern for them sounds more like CYA than anything genuine. This book is chilling, but for all the wrong reasons. I don't know whether she simply published this when her horse was still midstream or if this is what she considers a finished work of self-exploration and help for other women in her position -- if it's the latter, all I can say is "wow."

It boggles the mind to think about how so many people only see what they want to see and how easily most of us can be deceived. No wonder so many people have trust issues nowadays. Do we ever really know anyone ?
