Review # 1 was written on 2018-09-21 00:00:00 Mark Jones This biography of an a forgotten Rhode Island female author is well written, scholarly and full of information about the Dorr War, the anti-slavery movement, spiritualism, and the issues facing a woman writer in the middle of the 19th century. Most of Ms. McDougall's life has been forgotten. This book is a reconstruction based on the few know facts as well as extrapolating biographical information from her writings. Ms. O'dowd also places the subject in the middle of the causes she so passionately supports. If you are interested in Rhode Island history, womans history, the anti-slavery movement, or spiritualism this book is a must read. |
Review # 2 was written on 2018-09-19 00:00:00 Brian J. Lozoskie A really good survey of slavery it pays equal attention to abolition as it does to enslavement and even includes a chapter on its 20th century return as forced labour under the Soviets and Nazis |
