I first heard about Foote's book some twenty years ago in an LA Times article about dog books. At the time, my wife and I shared our home with an amazing Irish Setter named Rebel and I thought it might be fun to read someone else's take on the beautiful but goofy breed. One thing led to another and I put the clipping away and forgot about the book. Fast forward to last year when a manic bout of house cleaning revealed the long lost story. Taking it as a sign, I finally bought a copy of Dumb-Bell. I'm glad I did. Set in the decades following WW I, the stories deal with the exploits of sporting dogs - setters, pointers, and hounds - the type owned by landed American gentry who often seem to care more for their furry companions than their spouses and children. Think Downton Abbey with an American slant, where the dogs outshine the people. While the tales range from serious to humorous (Trub's Diary, the musing of a mischievous bull terrier, being one of the latter), the author's keen understanding of man and beast and his love of dogs infuses each story. To younger, contemporary readers, the material might seem politically incorrect - there are references to dog fighting, the occasional sexist or homophobic observation, and no PETA to chastise the hunters and fishermen - but a collection of diverse, loyal, courageous canine protagonists more than makes up for it.

Am Anfang war ich enttäuscht- Michael zieht sich ganz schön, während ich bei Jerry sofort begeistert war. Das letzte Drittel des Buches ist dafür fast stärker als Jerry war. Ein wirklich bemerkenswertes Buch!
