Review # 1 was written on 2019-11-30 00:00:00 Lamar Taylor Stumbled upon this book in a used bookstore and was intrigued so gave it a chance. Burgess is an amazing writer, no doubt about it. But at times I struggled to determine what he was really getting at in this book. To summarize, it's a book about the rhythm of language and music, a subject that clearly fascinates Burgess. I know I enjoyed the brief autobiographical parts that read more like a memoir. Would skip unless you're a huge Burgess fan. |
Review # 2 was written on 2020-05-14 00:00:00 John Efcvedc Honestly this book is kind of all over the place, but I kind of enjoyed the ride. Really good chapter on Joyce and how Joyce tried to mimic a musical structure with his writing. Also good sections on relations b/t music & meaning and language & meaning. |
