Review # 1 was written on 2018-03-16 00:00:00 Michael Lyons The epiphany Campbell’s characters invariably experience is the realization that the world is even more awful than they thought it was. Eleven essays on the novels and short stories of Ramsey Campbell, an author whom I both love and am bewildered by: love because of the force and beauty of his writing; am bewildered by because I frequently feel that I am missing his point (as it turns out, this reaction isn’t unusual and may even be somewhat intentional). This symposium was not only informative but highly entertaining reading, and reading it has energized me to jump back into the man’s work. If you are a person who can’t deal with spoilers, you might want to skip (or at least postpone) this book. I personally feel that the understanding of Ramsey’s often cryptic writing style that I gained from reading this will probably make up for the lack of a few surprises. |
