This book can be a bit of a slog to read, but I recommend it for three reasons 1) It was written by Theodore Roosevelt! 2) TR wrote it while he was president (nobody has ever done that before or since) 3) If you can make it through pages & pages & pages of excruciating details of various types of wildlife (mostly deer) Roosevelt has encountered (which almost inevitably end up dead), you will be rewarded with some wonderful TR'isms on manliness and the "strenuous life" such as "A man must feel the beat of hearty life in his veins before he can be a good big game hunter" or "we slept well and ate well and felt the beat of hearty life in our veins" or (after a long day of hunting) "we ate as men have a right to eat" In the end, this book is worth the slog. You will enjoy the trip inside TR's thoughts on nature, wildlife, killing said wildlife, and manliness at the dawn of the 20th century.. What's fascinating is he seemed to vividly recall every animal he has ever killed (and the body count is staggering - and this was before his trip to Africa) with such affection and fondness, its like he is strolling down memory lane thinking of the first girl he kissed as a kid in lower Manhattan

I have a copy of this original work, it is still as exciting now as when it was printed (1905). The chapter of wolf and coyote coursing alone is worth the price of the book. Read of the man who caught wolves and coyotes with his bare hands (ok he wore a glove). The hunts for sheep and goats in the Rocky Mts. as well as the chase of the deer in the badlands are all brought to life. Roosevelt was a keen sportsman and naturalist, he provides us a look at the American west at the turn of the century. recommend this book for anyone who wants to know what hunting in the old west was like.
