Review # 1 was written on 2011-11-02 00:00:00 Jennifer E Combs A brief time machine excursion into the mid-sixties New York East Village scene. Originally publisehed in 1966, the book serves as an introduction to the eclectic group of film makers, musicians, artists, poets and makers of happenings the "Combine Generation" (which he probably didn't intend to activate images of Nebraska harvesting machinery, but there you are....) Gruen waxes alternately ecstatic and dubious, acknowledging the excesses and tedium a times, annointing masterpieces at others. I first went to the East Village in the summer of 1970 when I lived on 6th Street off 2nd Avenue, so there's a certain nostalgic pleasure to revisiting places like Ed Sanders' Peace Eye Bookstore (the book includes a couple dozen photographs, which may be my favorite part). But its hard to imagine anyone who wasn't there getting a whole lot out of it. Fun cameo by Yoko Ono in her pre-John Lennon days. |
Review # 2 was written on 2012-05-11 00:00:00 Masanori Ochiai Interesting to read about perceptions of sex and race and art in real time in the mid-60s, especially during the current civil rights discussions. Otherwise, I skimmed most of it. |
