I just finished reading Bill Groneman's Eyewitness to the Alamo. I cannot recommend the volume because although it succeeded in collecting the various anecdotes related to the Siege. The anecdotes by and large were unaccompanied by information to explaining the context in which the accounts were given. For example, when describing the various accounts given by Enrique Esparza between 1901 and 1909. Groneman while giving the date of the account and the publication in which account appeared, he provided little background to establish the historical context surrounding each account. Regarding various accounts Esparza he merely stated that 'between 1901 and 1909 Esparza gave various accounts of the battle.

The only thing that keeps this from being a 5 star is the spin the writer puts on it. It is a great list of all written accounts of The Alamo eye witnesses. The writer interjects only when he wants to show you something contrary to his opinion is being made. Before Walt Disney and John Wayne created Davy Crocket characters, the story of the Alamo in Texas was different. Some Americans not originally from Texas can't handle heroes being less than perfect and therefore try to discount the Mexican side or any of the oral retelling of the Alamo. If you ignore the writer's interjections, it is a wonderful bit of history.
