Review # 1 was written on 2014-04-18 00:00:00 Rita Blair The classical philologist and indoeuropeanist Oswald Szemerenyi was honoured by three Festschriften in 1992 to celebrate his 75th birthday. This volume, the second of the three, contains papers on Greek and Latin. (The first and third volumes, respectively, are Prehistory, History, and Historiography of Language, Speech, and Linguistic Theory and Comparative-Historical Linguistics: Indo-European and Finno-Ugric.) The Greek side of this collection is the more abundant and is divided into the parts "Greek linguistics" (mainly some issues of syntax and morphology), "Greek lexicology", "Mycenology", and "Greek philology". Fewer papers concern the Latin side, with only four contributions looking at Latin or the other Italic languages, and another two on issues of Latin developing into Romance. The contributions are mainly in English or German, though three are in Italian, one in French, and another in Spanish. As someone who knows Szemerenyi's work as a cornerstone of 20th-century Indo-European linguistics, I must admit some disappointment at this volume on more parochial matters, and a few of the papers are seem quite mediocre. However, there are some "big names" here like Francisco Adrados, Gregory Nagy, and John Chadwick, and classicists are likely to find some things to enjoy here.
