Probably the type of book really enjoyed only by students of history, residents of Ashland (VA) or the author's family. On second thought the last group might get free copies, but may not enjoy them. A well-written and -documented survey of the self-proclaimed (assumedly tongue in cheek) "center of the universe," this book covers the founding and growth of this railroad town from it's founding along the first track of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad Company in 1834, through its growth as a resort for the wealthy and idle of Richmond (twenty miles south) and the devastation of the American Civil War. Then the improvished genilty of the late nineteenth century yielded to modern roads and suburbia.
