In reading, non-fiction books I really enjoy are those that change the way things are thought of. Jesse Larner's Mount Rushmore is one of those books. In the book, Larner provides the history behind Mount Rushmore and unfortunately, as in many American things, the history of Mount Rushmore is not based in purely admirable foundations. Readers will find the history of Mount Rushmore troubling and how one main goal of the carvings was that of to create an attraction to raise money. One other aspect the book illuminates, as others already knowledge about indigenous peoples' history are aware of, this carving has been done on sacred lands to indigenous people. An interesting book and highly recommended.

Another book about South Dakota history and the people of South Dakota, the Lakota Sioux. Wonderfully informative and painful to read of the broken treaties and promises along the way for the Indian communities. The Rushmore shrine itself has a different image in my mind after reading about the artist, G. Borglum, who carved the presidents into the stone. He was a white supremisist and member of the KKK which added to the picture. Hard to look at this shrine now without some distaste in my mind.
