Rutland asserts an interesting history of the intellectual and political processes behind creating the Bill of Rights. The main points of this study include: -The ideas behind personal freedoms were not originally American but were sourced from English traditions -The need for constitutional amendments were born out of AntiFederalists' fear of the federal Constitution overpowering the personal liberties guaranteed by the states. -The Bill of Rights was forged out the political initiatives of folks like Madison, Mason, and Jefferson who were among the moderates of their time. While not the most riveting historical read, there is a lot to learn from The Birth of the Bill of Rights, 1776-1791. Rutland's conclusions touches on some the changes the Bill of Rights had experienced up until his authorship in 1955. It makes one wonder what he would have thought about recent initiatives that challenge the original amendments (most notable against the 4th amendment).

Jones works best at novel length, and I cannot shake the feeling that some of these go back to her college years. While some are tremendous, she is as much a born novelist as I am a cigarette smoker. The result: middling-to-brilliant; fitting for someone whose best work requires a much larger canvas. (That cover though? Man, that is the epitome of one cool looking dust jacket. Woooo-weeeeeee.)
