A tall, dark, and handsome stranger (Ward Levitt) shows up at Verna Pemberton's flat in England and tells her he knows her father. Verna sends him away. Her father died when she was just a baby and she doesn't know what Ward is talking about. But Ward comes back and persuades Verna otherwise. Ward tells Verna he can take her to meet her father. So she goes to Brazil with Ward. They arrive in Rio and prepare to fly to Belém the next day to where Verna's father lives. But on the flight to Belém they experience engine trouble and have to make a crash-landing. Stranded in the jungle with a broken down plane Ward and Verna encounter Indians, insects, alligators... Verna wonders if they will ever make it out alive to meet her father... Ward thought of Verna as a firecracker. She was headstrong, very independent, and self-confident. At first she was shrewish, cranky, and argumentative. But she had to learn to rely on Ward to get her through and as the story progressed I thought she did very well in the jungle, during rough situations. I liked Ward, he was the typical Harlequin alpha-male hero, self-assured, strong, and bossy. I enjoyed the tropical setting of this book. This was a fun jungle romance by Margaret Mayo.

I enjoy romances with jungle settings, which this one had, and back in the day when I was more into Harlequin Romances, the heroine's age wouldn't have bothered me. Now it sort of does - this girl was 19 and something of a spoilt brat, but to give her the benefit of the doubt she *was* thrown into being stranded in the Brazilian jungle because of engine trouble on their plane. I don't know how I'd handle being stranded, in the middle of heat, humidity, bugs, snakes and all sorts of icky critters.
