PROTAGONIST: Carl Wilcox SETTING: South Dakota SERIES: #4 of 16 RATING: 3.5 WHY: Carl Wilcox is an official PI. Trixie Cook is accused of murdering her husband, Bernie. He wasn't the nicest guy, known for being a world-class liar. He also pimped his wife to other men. Carl is hired by Trixie's sister, Rita, to clear her. There are quite a few suspects, and links to some hot jewelry Bernie was selling. Carl is no Eagle Scout. Nice job on the 1930s setting, and I always enjoy the sharp-tongued dialogue. Solid but not spectacular.

Written in the 1980s, set in 1930s South Dakota, the Carl Wilcox books (of which this is the 4th)are an interesting homage to hard-boiled pulp fiction. Carl is a drifter and a brawler, who has temporarily quit drifting(but not brawling), more literate than those around him expect--not that any of them notice. A nice solid read, with a good feel for the period.
