I have only the tiniest sliver of cultural capital when it comes to understanding this the context of this story cycle so bear with me. This book sketches the journey of K'etetaalkkaanee, a man on his journey to accumulate spirit power. He does this by traveling between homes and small villages by canoe, symbolically interacting with people and animals/spirits (ravens caribou beaver etc) as he carries on his journey. The interludes are short, often no more than two pages. From an outside perspective, it is the archetypical Alaska Native quest for personal meaning and I can picture someone reciting these to family over a winter fire. The format, with Attla's original Denaakk'e language side-by-side with translated English, was easy to read with helpful contextual footnotes. The transcribers/translators of Attla's oral tradition also seem to have left in her tangents ("I don't remember this next part", "Now, you see...") among the stories to adhere more closely to what was said rather than claiming editorial power over which words to excise in the interest of smoother written copy. This was very appreciated. In the end, though, this book made me sad. It is an academic release (though it seems in good faith) of an oral tradition that is clearly - if not dying - becoming more intertwined and dispersed with colonial society with fewer and fewer elders (and listeners) to keep these stories alive in their mythic form. As the book progresses, the stories become less detailed until finally there is no remembrance.
