I know the author personally - which is important not only for a review, but for the context while reading, especially since it's an autobiography. The most amazing part of this autobiography is that it's about the author's life BEFORE HE WAS FIVE YEARS OLD. I believe most of it is from memory. If his mom was like my grandma regarding bedtime stories from the past, I'm sure most of these stories were retold to him & his sister many times during their youth. I really appreciated reading about life in rural Virginia in the 1940's. I'd like to read about Dr. Gilley's adult years too. He went on to become the youngest university president, then Sec. of Education for Virginia. He's had an amazing past, but if you ever meet him, he comes across as a quiet, simple retired guy.

Written as fiction, it contains details of true events that the author was involved with during his service in Vietnam. A view into the thoughts and feelings of a true helicopter warrior.
