Review # 1 was written on 2016-02-08 00:00:00 Amber Demeter Heading out to Algonquin for the first time, a place on my bucket list, and wanted to do some reading to prepare for the experience. This sounded interesting on its face -- stories of women who lived on Canoe Lake in the park. I was however, disappointed. It was a fine history of some of the families who lived on Canoe Lake and gave me an overview of some background of the place. But it wasn't a very cohesive narrative. I was hoping for more stories about the women, but many were about the men who held the leases or who brought the women to Canoe Lake. At times it read more like a colloquial history meant for people already with intimate knowledge of the camps and sites and surroundings. Also as an upcoming visitor, the disdain at the end for daytrippers was slightly depressing. Still glad I read the book. |
Review # 2 was written on 2017-08-11 00:00:00 Carmen Rentas For those familiar with CanoeLake this might be interesting as it is a historical fact book. The story telling is non-existent so unless you can relate to the specifics, one is not drawn into this book. |
