Review # 1 was written on 2011-05-21 00:00:00 Frank Cochran It is easy to use the cliche of 'widening participation' in higher education. This book activates a study to understand who stays on to post secondary education and who does not. There is attention to rurality, urbanity and gender. But also there is a considered focus on financial assistance and the effectiveness of loans and scholarships in not only assisting students to enter higher education, but to stay until the completion of a degree or qualification. It is an edited collection, but each chapter provides data, evidence and interpretation of what actually works in assisting disadvantaged students in entering post secondary education. There is attention on personal and parental aspiration, funding and location. |
