Fabulous! The subtitle of this book is: Your Guide to Every Home Improvement Adventure and it is. Tome & Leslie (authors) leave no stone unturned -- they address it all. I xeroxed lots of pages relating to different topics and learned some interesting facts along the way, as well. For example, did you know that our kitchens are making us fat? It's true! The homes of the 50's were about 80 square feet and had walls on 4 sides. Families were "forced" to take their food out of the kitchen & eat in the dining room. Today's kitchens are larger to act as the family gathering space. Kitchen islands are one of the most requested new kitchen features and with them comes the tendency to serve food buffet style. Dawn Jackson Blatner, a registered dietician & spokesperson for the American Diabetic Assn. says that she sees about 100 people/month for weight mgmt. issues. One of the first things she suggests is to stop eating family style where the food is kept on the table & people are invited to help themselves. Rather, she suggests putting food on a plate and carrying it to the dining room to eat. If food is in sight, it will most likely end up in our mouth. Prerinsing Dishes: Do or Don't? Don't! Check out page 34 to find out why! Washing Machine Hygiene: Do you know that your washing machine may not be washing the germs out of your clothes? Over the years, washing machines can become contaminated with bacteria, potentially leaving millions of germs behind in your laundry. To correct this problem, run the washer without clothes using just hot water and one-half gallon of bleach. The bleach will sanitize the machine and all its plumbing components, killing any bacteria that have been left behind. I also found good info. for dealing with contractors if/when I need to do this, dealing with roof issues, mold issues, bathroom remodels, kitchen remodels, and more!

A pretty good starter book to home improvements. There are some helpful tips, but mostly the book is about empowering new home owners. It's important to believe that nothing in a house is rocket science and that with patience and the right tools, anyone can keep a house in good working order.
