Review # 1 was written on 2012-08-06 00:00:00 Morten Pedersen An intriguing and complex novel by one of Canada's top young adult fiction authors. (This is her first novel for adults.) The main characters are all well developed. A few of the minor characters (particularly Ed's sister) don't seem real, however. My major issue with the large number of coincidences that drive the plot (yes, it ties all the plot points together beautifully in the end, but it seems just a little too coincidental). And then there's the matter of a publisher and an editor caring that much about a manuscript that was missing the contact information for its author. Would that actually happen in the real world? Not in the world of publishing I know. I may be being a bit too generous with the stars, but the writing was excellent and the book was enjoyable. I can't give it less than four stars despite the aforementioned flaws. |
Review # 2 was written on 2013-12-26 00:00:00 Jose Gonzalez All in all it was a really pleasant reading, though a little weak in the plot department. It gave me the impression that the author sketched a time line with main plot points and then just wrote a few paragraphs around every point to make it into a relatively short novel. The way almost every event is related to one another doesn't benefit the novel's authenticity. And it seems that "trifle" is the author's favourite word for "a little," "slightly," "somewhat," "a bit," and many more synonyms worth considering. I imagine this book is a transition between Johnston's young adult and adult writing, and I am waiting for a next, more developed, novel (if there are such plans), because her insightful and amusing style is worth continuing. |
