Review # 1 was written on 2020-06-01 00:00:00 Richard Dubois A must-read for everyone. It is well thought and very well researched analysis of religion (specifically of Christianity and Islam), creations of patriarchy and where it all comes from. I very much enjoyed how the book goes into early history, Sumerian Laws, views of Aristotle and Plato, similarities and differences regarding women's status in times BC and how it evolved AD. It was very interesting to read the paradoxes and concepts around "veiling", why some women chose to wear the veil and how it is viewed amongst different sexes. I do agree that, if we want to achieve an equal world without patriarchal norms, feminism has to look into theology and should not be afraid to deal with difficult issues and should not shy away from it. |
Review # 2 was written on 2012-12-18 00:00:00 Samuel Higgins This is a highly informative layman's history of how Westerners discovered Buddhism, particularly Indian Buddhism, during the British Raj. Buddhism began in India 2600 years ago, and Westerners didn't know anything about it two hundred years ago. Englishmen did archeological digs and places relevant to Buddhism, many of which I visited on pilgrimage. The book had the rather pleasant side effect of bringing me back to the pilgrimage in India and Nepal. |
