Review # 1 was written on 2011-09-24 00:00:00 Peter Delohery I had to read this book for an English class subsequent to reading Billy Budd. I found it to be very interesting, although some essays require a greater knowledge of Melville's anthology because of allusions to other works. There are four essays, with the fourth being a close analysis of Billy Budd without references to other books. The first three essays range from pretty straight forward (the first) to a little more abstract and hard to follow (the third). Overall, I found this to be a valuable supplement to Billy Budd. It provided a lot of interesting insights I hadn't considered before. While it probably isn't a good option for recreational reading, it would be very helpful for students, scholars, or big fans of Melville. |
