Review # 1 was written on 2017-10-27 00:00:00 Fabrice Nosy I really enjoyed this collection of essays for practitioners of alternative spirituality who want to foster spiritual growth for their children. I found the chapters on meditation with children particularly helpful. It was due back at the library, so I didn't finish reading it and never got to the later chapters on older children, but that's not really pertinent for me right now anyway. I would definitely consider checking it out again in the future.

Review # 2 was written on 2016-04-05 00:00:00 Miriam Trowbridge The book might be better titled, "Jesus the Village Psychoanalyst," because Capps' Jesus was Freudian before Freud was cool. Capps knows Freud better than Jesus, and 19th-century Europe better than 1st-century Palestine, so he interprets the unknown from the known. The result is mixed and, alas, unconvincing. Capps argues that the people that Jesus healed had conversion disorders and hysterical disorders, and Jesus healed them through transference. Maybe. I respect Capps' work in pastoral care. His work in historical Jesus studies is a bit shallow, I must confess. I hope that the next time Capps will do more of his homework.
