Adler's basic premise is this: psychology as a discipline can address the type of human suffering caused by social maladjustment. If one suffers it is likely that feels he does not belong. This is likely caused by an early feeling of inferiority, which creates a drive to superiority. But this drive is often expressed by seeking a sense of superiority in some fantastical or esoteric fashion. Thus the individual is doubly alienated. First by his feeling that he doesn't belong because of shortcomings, and second by the feeling he has created that he is too good to bother with the inherent competitiveness of human society. Adler is a tough pragmatist. At times he reads like the reductionist and scientifically hegemonic Skinner. But his pragmatism is modest in its scope. And his language is accented with empathy. He urges that suffering individuals be brought back into the fold of community and encouraged to live "on the useful side of life." He leaves many of his terms open to definition. I get the sense that "useful" doesn't necessarily mean "productive," but connected to other humans and towards the welfare of common life. There is none of the sturm und drang of Freud or Jung. Adler is more of a Schiller. In that sense a bit conservative. Certainly not revolutionary in the dialectical sense, but perhaps all the more capable of producing long-term change.

Kitabın başında diyor zaten Adler, kuramlara körü körüne bağlanmayın her kuramdaki mantıklı olanları alın diye.
