I had always wanted to read this book, since it was cited in nearly all of the papers I read on the field of sociology of art. I found it haphazardously in a used bookstore and bought it instantly; it wasn't cheap, indeed. It didn't blow my mind. Having been published in 1990, can't say the years don't show. Much of the research in the area, luckily, has proven some of this book's diagnosis wrong. Also, it focuses more on how the sociology of art interacts with the broader field of sociology (and its core concerns such as power, status, culture) than on what are the actual tasks to be developed by the sociology of art per se. There are many interesting remarks, though, and I am writing some references down for further reading.
