This is a balanced and coherent attempt to assess Herbert Asquith's role as Prime Minister during the first half of the First World War. It seeks to give due credit for Asquith's positive qualities and calm stewardship whilst at the time showing how his approach and manner became increasingly unsuitable and ill-matched for the unprecedented task of leading the UK in the conflict. However, this balanced analysis does not feed through to the short concluding chapter, which argues that Asquith's wartime "achievements are sufficiently impressive to earn him a place as one of the outstanding figures of the Great War". The evidence that Cassar supplies in the book does not support that conclusion, and it does not do justice to analysis in the book. So this is a qualified endorsement of this account.

Honestly, I didn't read all of it, but I read most of it. Very good.
