Review # 1 was written on 2014-11-10 00:00:00 Mary Ellen Anderson Picked this up to peruse as a source for a research paper. It didn't end up actually adding that much to my research, but I read it cover to cover anyway. I would like to go 3.5 stars, but as we must, I rounded, in this case, down. The book was interesting and definitely brought up some themes that I had not previously considered - for instance, the intersection of Holocaust and gender studies - but ultimately, it felt more like a collection of personal essays than a scholarly work. Roth is fascinating, and his own scholarly adventures are worth reading about, but he needs to call a spade a spade, rather than try to tie his stories in with scholarly examination. So, interesting = definitely. useful for research = not so much. |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-01-29 00:00:00 Adam Burkes An interesting and well-researched book on how Jewish mothers compared to English and Irish Catholic mothers in regards to child welfare, use of social services, maternal and infant mortality, etc. |
