I read this book over a series of lunch hours, after picking it up at the free table in the cafeteria. This book was very basic, almost like a grade school assignment. I couldn't believe how it was written, so I looked up the author. This was his first book, published originally in 2003. The characters were all very one dimensional, and the names were very basic, so much so that they were getting confused in my mind. Aside from the victim, the spouse, and the detective, the characters were very stereotypical and forgettable. Most were unpleasant, and I kept wondering if this was some kind of farce novel. The reader does not form any bond with any character, and I found myself not really caring what happened to any of them. This is a little unusual for me. The one that really stood out was Marlene, a loose woman, that very crudely propositioned every man she came across. I started to wonder who the victim would be, since I was not very invested in any of the characters. None of the characters seemed real. It was like reading a high school production play, everyone awkward with their lines and just walking in and out of scenes without much expression or delivery. I had high hopes for the detective, since none of the passengers really emerged as "main characters". He was a bit of a disappointment, coming out of the woodwork just before the very amateurish murder took place. His investigation was unbelievably simple, and I am a little surprised he figured it out. I had picked up a second book of this author, at the same time at work, and after finishing this one, I looked through it, it might be better. I might try it. I really don't know. I don't really recommend it.

The writing has an amateurish quality to it. Heavy with useless, draining dialogue, almost to the point to make the reader fall out of the chair in sleep-inducing boredom. The author has the characters regularly snapping at one another in conversation, often responding in anger or impatience. Some of the dialogue is sleazy. Particularly the exchange where Marlene offers herself up to Hank in the bar or her comment to the maitre' d when he tells her that she needs appropriate apparel to enter the dining room. Snore. Oh wait! I'm only at 15%. Give me stronger coffee!!! At 25% now and I can't finish reading this.
