Review # 1 was written on 2019-03-28 00:00:00 Michael Moore This is another one of those great non-fiction books that is so full of distractions that you don't even think to get bored. Pictures, illustrations, captions, weird shapes with tidbits of information hiding inside; this book is just packed with little bits of info in all kinds of fun formats. I was interested because of the historical aspect, and the whys and wherefores are always so fun when they're explained in the right way. This book should have a wider appeal than one that only focuses on one sport. This particular book covers such varieties of recreation as circuses, dueling, water sports, physical challenges, and many more. I also think the author made an effort to include pictures of girls or women whenever possible, which goes a long way toward making this book pretty gender-neutral. The variety of pictures and the digestible chunks of information might also be appetizing to reluctant readers.

Review # 2 was written on 2020-12-04 00:00:00 Yethinthtut Bobo My son and I finished reading They Played What?! The Weird History of Sports and Recreation by Richard Platt - some parts would be more appropriate for 3rd grade and up but overall this book was fascinating. I loved reading with him about pistols, war games, running, animal racing, hunting games, roller coasters, and many other entertainments through time. Pretty fascinating book. ** Plus this counts for a reading gap challenge book as well, one I really enjoyed/understood!
