First, I'm kinda prejudiced since I'm the author of this book. But the rating I gave it is based on the feedback I have gotten, not on my personal opinion/bias. This book evolved over the course of 10 years of online discussions with various people. I kept a journal of what I considered "good" posts that I'd written - i.e.: I felt I'd really communicated my point well. One day I realized that (a) I had a lot of raw material and (b) there were a lot of common threads running through it. This led me to realize that there were a lot of things about martial arts and martial arts training that a lot of people simply don't know or haven't given much thought to. I used that raw material (the journal I'd kept) as my starting point for this book and wrote the book in an effort to bring some of these issues to light for people. It's not an instructional book, per se, though there are certainly some instructional areas. It's more, as the title suggests, intended to get the reader thinking about the topics in the book. I present my thoughts on the subject to provide food for thought but, ultimately, the book isn't intended to convince anyone of anything. I just wanted to get people thinking about these things. The topics run from, "What *is* a black belt?" to the role that media (books/magazines/videos) should & shouldn't play in training to discussing/dispelling some myths about martial arts and training in general. In the words of one reader, "It has everything in it that a person *should* know by the time they're a black belt - but few actually do." In the words of another reader, Joe Lansdale (highly respected martial artist and award-winning author who wrote the forward to this book), "It's one of the best martial arts books I've read in years." And Joe is not one to sugar coat things for anyone. I truly believe (and have been told by various readers of the book) that this book has something for everyone. Someone who doesn't train but is interested in martial arts will find advice on finding a martial arts instructor. People who already train, regardless of rank, will find information they may not be aware of or, if they are aware of it, they haven't given it much thought. And even if someone is already aware of everything in the book and *has* given it thought, they are still likely to find my perspectives interesting and thought provoking.
