This is an awesome way to step into history and not just read a text book. There are three paths to take and each path is full of historical information and some suspense. I enjoyed being able to choose what I wanted to do and not just read about one person's viewpoint. It was great to go back and take a different path so that I could see all three paths and all 12 endings. I learned so much from this book. For example, I didn't realize there were replacement freedom riders. This was because the first line of riders were beaten so badly they could not continue. I think a teacher could use these types of books to enhance any history lesson. It would definitely pull in some reluctant readers. You could set up groups to take certain paths and make certain decisions and then they could report back what happened. The class, as a whole, could map out all the different choices on a poster.

4/5 stars (Warning since this book is for younger readers, I curse in this review... a lot) This... Was some shit man. When I was younger (elementary school days) I was so into learning about Harriet Tubman and MLK. The social justice warrior was always alive and kicking inside me. This was totally different than any of the civil rights books I read back in the day because it was interactive, either way society was fucked up in that day but it was crazy to feel like you were living in that terrible time and what would happen in your life based on whether or not you choose to fight the system. Plus I loved the idea of interactive books but never read one before it was like some Butterfly Effect shit. But the thing is that this book and tons of media like this is important as hell but it also makes me an unhealthy level of sad and pissed off. Whether it's people fighting racism, homophobia, sexism or any other form of oppression seeing stuff like this just makes me hate the other side, the ignorant dumbasses with a superiority complex that thought it was okay to treat human beings like this. Overall: If I had children, I'd definitely have them read this. It's fun but still teaches a lot of real facts about history.
