This is an insightful book, and I'm glad I read it, but it's so incredibly Marxist! As a public school teacher, it's hard to find the balance between teaching what I think is right as an individual, and what I feel that I should be teaching as an employee in my school and of the state. Questions of race, gender, class, and power make that balance more complicated and more vital. This book didn't help resolve the tension that teachers wrestle with- nor should it- it just gave me more to ponder.

Capitalism, slavery, and racism Can Education really be considered assimilation? What is the difference? Can there be education without assimilation? Multicultural education is assimilation in that American Education is central. Anti racist Education doesn't require assimilation.
