Review # 1 was written on 2018-07-10 00:00:00 Rene Maradiaga In Literacy in American Lives (2001), Deborah Brandt explores the literacy practices and memories of 80 Americans living in rural Wisconsin in the 1990s, born between 1895 and 1985. She takes a contextual approach, in order to avoid simplifying literacy as a mere matter of decoding and encoding (3), and understands that literacy practices are often in response to large scale and local economic change, as well as influenced by history (4). Literacy for Brandt is "a resource'economic, political, intellectual, spiritual'which . . . is per sued for the opportunities and protections that it potentially grants its seekers" (5). She also offers the important term "sponsors of literacy," who are agents "who enable, support, teach, and model, as well as recruit, regulate, suppress, or withhold, literacy'and gain advantage by it in some way" (19). Brandt closes with some implications: literacy sponsorship is changing in some drastic ways, being sponsored now by a more diverse and disperse number of agents; more resources are being brought into home that are now used for teaching and learning; literacy practices are changing so quickly that one's literacy practices and learning will not necessarily match well with one's children or students; and we need to understand literacy education as part of a civil rights context (197-207).
