Review # 1 was written on 2010-01-12 00:00:00 Ronald Susmarski Good discussion of the performative nature of joy in the Hebrew Scriptures--what he calls its behavioral expression. Many times English translations suggest that joy is an emotion, when the context implies that it is an action and is better translated "celebrate," rather than "feel happy." In addition to biblical sources, Anderson discusses rabbinic texts, the Ugaritic Baal cycle, and the Gilgamesh Epic to support his argument. Greater emphasis on the expression of joy than on the expression of grief. |
Review # 2 was written on 2016-03-05 00:00:00 Linda Specker Keeping the title in mind, one finds too much reliance on rabbinic sources. Still, an excellent anthropological study of mourning an joy in ancient Israel/Judah. |
