This is a great sourcebook to look to for assistance while writing a research paper on the concept of treason in England during the Middle Ages. It was surprisingly easy to read. I got the sense that Bellamy was not only writing for those in the field, but to a wider audience of people. What I mean is that he actually provides background information. He doesn't just mention events and expect you to know what he is talking about off the top of your head. He covers all kinds of issues and episodes in history which contributed to the idea of treason and how the law was practiced. He discusses Anglo-Saxon law, Roman law, the statute of 1352, what kind of powers the monarch had, accorachment of royal power, punishments for treason, and will also give information about how theories played out in France. He gives a lot of background so by the end you feel like you have a solid understanding of the events and the ideas that shaped the law of treason over the years. This book is not boring at all. You can read it from beginning to end, not like some scholarly texts that you index read. I'm glad I found it.

This is a short, rather involved study of a set of individuals. The set doesn't assemble until a good third of the book. By then, a number of parameters are set and then it's just a matter of see the end of the book coming up and trying to figure if this is a western version of Ten Little Indians or Vince Flynn action book. It's a bit of both. Patten, again, proves he can pack a pound into an 8 ounce can with a good taste afterwards. Sure, there is a kinda expected ending, but how it comes about it well done. This book would not have worked a few hundred pages longer, as would be required today. Bottom line: I recommend this book. 7 out of ten points.
