My prior knowledge of the medieval period is vague, built mostly on a sixth grade history period where we had to draw out the feudal system. This book filled in many gaps and provided delightful detail. How did the ladies of a manor live? What were they daily duties? Here's your book. Her husband might be out fighting for the king and she stayed home and kept *the entire estate running in his absence.* She dealt with all the servants, oversaw tenants, pursued reading, sports and hobbies, saw to the education of the sons of other noble families who were pages in her home, treated illness, planned meals and gardening and food preservation and so very much more. Homemaking is NOT a task for the faint of heart now or then. I am impressed with how much information was conveyed here. The illustrations are copies of art from the era and some made for this book. I would not have wanted to be a woman at this time period. However, their respect for widows was one area I was wishing we modern people still held.

Even though this book is directed to children, I bought this book at the library book sale for 50 cents because I am fascinated with all things Medieval. It's a great little book; informative and interesting. I learned quite a bit!
