Review # 1 was written on 2019-08-03 00:00:00 Ray Hansen Dio is such an imposing figure. He doesn't feel like an actual person at all. He really is this living embodiment of evil that has haunted the Joestar clan for generations. And the way his stand's power is slowly revealed with mysterious reality warping experiences is fantastic. For once, the focus is put on the internal experience of the heroes rather than the enemy stand user, and the result is terrifying. This 100 year old force of evil can seemingly rewrite the rules of reality at a whim. He feels like a god. And he proceeds to just dismantle the Stardust Sailors. Reality comes crashing down as the lighthearted antics of the past are replaced by the force of nature that is Dio. There's nothing they can do. It takes all they have just to understand what Dio's power is. Things just keep getting more and more dire until that moment. The moment where Jotaro catches up with Dio. And it the tension peaks with one of the most iconic panels in manga. Jotaro and Dio approach each other. Dio's wide, careless gait and swinging arms contrasts with Jotaro's more compact form. Dio dominates the frame as if he is descending upon our hero. The ground beneath them warps as if they're walking on a globe. The result is this feeling that two larger than life titans are about to throw down. This panel has become a meme for good reason. It is flamboyant, exaggerated, and outrageous, but also dead serious in its absurdity. The rules of anatomy and perspective are bent in service of a specific tone that just works. It's pure Jojo.
