Ahh. Finally, in book 6, we meet the last of our importantish characters! The first half of the book is mostly episodic - a woman who's unable to escape her own choice, a sheltered girl whose incomplete nightmare is hard to read and a trip to the Delerium when Hifumi accidentally totals something of Hiruko's (complete with trips into the depths of Kairi's... um... unusual daydreams.) But then we get a story about a young woman whose waking life is being affected by a change in her dream, and when Hiruko helps her and eats this particular nightmare, he notices an odd taste. That odd taste is our first sign of Tsukishiro, another baku but one with a very different idea of how to go about it than Hiruko has. And most of the rest of the book, for better or worse, follows on the fallout from that. While I'm sure this new character works for a lot of people, I have a bit of trouble warming up to him. Maybe it's because he comes in more than halfway through the story, or maybe it's because he seemingly only gets introduced to serve a particular purpose and never really extends beyond that plot convenience. Either way, while I can appreciate the counterpoint he serves and the catalyst he is to getting more information which we'd otherwise never see, his inclusion sometimes feels a bit lazy.

Just when I thought that "Nightmare Inspector" couldn't possibly creep me out any more, Mashiba does it again with Volume #6. In this volume, we are introduced to the dangers of interpreting dreams too positively, a funny fantasy of Delirium's master involving Hifumi and Hiruko's need to replace Hiruko's special briefcase, as well as a journey into Mizuki's dreams/nightmares about her lost brother Azusa, courtesy of another Baku, but one who torments dreamers in order to either ripen their nightmares or drive them to suicide. Where will his interest in his "old friend" Hiruko take the friendly neighborhood Baku and his friends Hifumi and Mizuki too? At this rate, I might never get a good nights sleep again.
