Review # 1 was written on 2014-10-07 00:00:00 Joseph Czajkowski Reading this from my own Cop's Kid perspective, I found the similarities amusing. Little things like the framed pictures of dignitaries. We didn't have JFK on the wall like Mel did; we had Mayor Daley Senior's picture on the wall, right alongside all of our school pictures. The creepy eeriness that you knew that your Dad could appear behind you at any moment. Quick read, only 138 pages with a writing style reminiscent of Erma Bombeck, this was a nice light summer read. |
Review # 2 was written on 2014-04-08 00:00:00 Taylor Quantz Great fun! This memoir by a member of the "local aristocracy" in Gustavus, Alaska (population 350) is a wonderful read. In the early 1960's, she and her husband - along with the eight children - left their home in Falmouth, MA in a converted school bus, driving across Canada to move to Alaska. The author is so funny, and the stories are even better. I can't imagine people actually doing what they did - but it's true! (We met her granddaughter at dinner last summer, when we ate at the Gustavus Inn ...) Alaska is clearly not that far from being "frontier," as evidenced by their experience. Reading it made me homesick for our drive north:-) |
