I picked this book up because the last (and only) Jackie Ivie book I read rated one of the very few 5 stars I have given a light romance. Having loved "A Knight in White Satin" so much, I thought to read more of Ivie's work. Proof that life is never consistent... The last third of this book is the ONLY thing that saved this from a 1 to 2 star rating. The first 2/3 of the story was so brainless and silly, I was tempted to just chuck it. I'm glad I kept going because the writing and plot actually rose enough at the end to make it somewhat interesting. The most delightful part of the book was the heroine, herself. Sybil was just eccentric enough to be highly entertaining. She was so different than any other women I have read in HR that - even with the ridiculous first half - she gave me a reason to continue. Kudos for the heroine! While the story itself never could climb above average, at least it didn't end up in the atrocious pile.

This book was alright. It had some humor to it, which I liked. Something that I think could have been described in more detail is the feud between the two clans. I think not enough attention was given in the book to that and the author definitely could have done more with this. In fact, it was confusing, but the author only made it minor in the story. Which is disappointing because it makes the novel seem unfinished. The epilogue is so brief, but the last paragraph mentions Sinclair, one of the characters. He is relevant to the mystery/feud, but Jackie Ivie doesn't really address his character much in the story. At one point, Sybil mistakes another man for Vincent because they have similar scars. This character gives a little insight into the feud when he interacts with Sybil (page 233). I was left wondering if this is Sinclair? And based on some knowledge provided during the story (like near the end, on pages 319 & 320, which mentions Vincent's childhood friend Edward Carrick) if Sinclair is actually Edward Carrick and is therefore alive and well? The epilogue I mentioned earlier (that last paragraph) makes me think this. So there are definitely some unanswered questions and the author wasn't clear about this part of the novel. This leaves me feeling a little unsatisfied. Sybil and Vincent's romance was enjoyable though. I like the way the author writes and how she develops their relationship throughout the story. Sybil is very bright and Jackie Ivie does a wonderful job in my opinion describing how smart Sybil is. This comes into play in the book many times. Vincent is described as being very handsome and is gifted with musical ability. Both characters I think are well developed. This is my first Jackie Ivie novel and I'm looking forward to reading some more by her.
